Main purpose of job:

This role has two focuses: promoting the UK in the north-east of Brazil and administration of the consulate’s operations. In both of these areas the candidate will work closely and share objectives with the consul.

The ideal candidate for the job will be enthusiastic about the north-east of Brazil and the UK. A “people-person” would be successful in the role, as many of the position’s responsibilities depend on having a good network of local public and private sector contacts as well as being able to deliver as part of the large team of Her Majesty’s Government in Brazil.

The candidate should be keen to promote regional partnerships with the UK in the areas of research, development, trade, education and public management through meetings, events and collaboration. The candidate will be able to participate on the whole project form conception up to implementation to advance the UK’s interests in these areas.

The candidate should be able to competently perform the consulate’s admin work, which are no less important than the external activities.

Finally, the role will include a small but important responsbility to British nationals who contact the consulate requiring assistance of varying degress of difficulty and urgency. The candidate should be able to show empathy, patience and proactivity in order to support our consular customers.
Roles and responsibilities:

    • develop a network of public and private sector contacts
    • promote potential partnerships with the UK
    • implement promotional events
    • plan visits from the UK to the region and vice-versa

Essential qualifications and experience  

  • Experience of relationship management
  • Experience of budget management
  • Experience of delivering projects
  • Fluent in English and Portuguese

Desirable qualifications and experience  

  • Knowledge of the UK
  • Knowledge of Bahia, Ceará and Pernambuco
  • Knowledge of the Newton Fund, Prosperity Fund, Consular Work and Chevening

Additional information  

 The candidate will be sent to the UK ASAP to perform the “Emergency Assistence Work” consular course in order to better help British nationals requiring assistence at post. While in the UK the candidate will be able to undertake futher informal training to understand the FCO’s priorities.

The Recife Consulate has a strong focus on self-developing and so opportunties for learning within the team will frequent. The Foreign Office also funds short courses which the candidate will be able to apply for.

Must be willing and able to travel for short periods up to eight times per year.

The British Consulate in Recife aims to be as flexible as possible in staff’s working hours. It may be possible to start and end your day at nonstandard times, to work condensed hours or to work at different times on different days.
